INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

An International Studies Internship Course INTL 3099 is now available. It gives students the opportunity to earn academic credits as they gain work experience in a government or private agency concerned with international matters of some sort. It is like any independent study class – it lasts for a full semester and a letter grade is assigned at the end. For most internships, students can earn three hours of academic credit. These hours will count toward the elective hours required for a major in International Studies, but not toward requirements for your concentration. The course can be taken during the fall, spring, or summer semester. Mark Gasiorowski is the advisor and supervisor for students wishing to take the course, but only a limited number of 40 internships will be available. There are three other conditions:

1) YOU MUST ORGANIZE THE INTERNSHIP YOURSELF. Mark Gasiorowski will not be available to do that for you. His job is to advise, grade and supervise you during the course.
2) You must submit a list of four books (plus two alternates) that you will read during the internship, together with a short statement explaining how these are related to the nature of your internship. Your coursework will basically involve 1) writing reports on the books (and how they relate to your work) and 2) keeping a journal.
3) The Internship must be directly related to international matters.

Bear in mind that it may take some time to find an internship and that internship opportunities fill up quickly. So you should begin looking immediately. Also, very few internships pay anything and you must be prepared to pay your own way – i.e. travel, room and board. Why should you go to that expense? Well, in addition to having an interesting summer in, say, Washington Rome or Timbuctu, doing an internship will give you a track-record and enhance your resume. This is something that prospective employers will take note of and that might even give you a foot in the door for a future job, if they like your work.

INTL 3099 / INTERNSHIP COURSE

General Requirements
There are three general requirements for the internship:
(1) Satisfactory completion of work at an approved position. Approximately 10 hours of work each week is expected for a minimum of 120 hours over the course of the semester. An evaluation form is sent to your supervisor at the end of the semester to gauge your performance.
(2) Reading and writing assignments. Well in advance of your departure, you must agree with the International Studies Internship Advisor on a suitable sets of books related to your internship that you will be asked to read, then write reports on. Four books are assigned and students are expected to provide a 3-4 page written summary and analysis of each book and its relevance to the organization where they are working.
(3) Journal of activities. A daily or weekly report of your work activities must be submitted along with the number of hours worked for each entry.

*NOTE: the internship work may not be applied to any other internship program. In other words, you cannot use the internship hours toward another academic program of study.

Steps in the Process
(1) Find an internship position related to international matters. You must do all the work for this yourself. To get started you can consult our list of URLs [see Website/Program/Internship/International Internship Opportunities]. But please note, Mark Gasiorowski is not available to arrange internships for you. That’s your responsibility.

(2) Obtain approval from the International Studies Internship Advisor for the internship and register for the course. (Contact Mark Gasiorowski at pogasi@lsu.edu). Credit will not be given for work completed prior to obtaining department approval.

(3) Complete all the duties assigned by the internship supervisor in the office where you have the internship and hand in all academic components (book reviews and journal) on time to the International Studies Internship Advisor.

If you have questions, or when you are ready to obtain departmental approval for an internship, contact Mark Gasiorowski by email (pogasi@lsu.edu)
