Center for Academic Success

The Center for Academic Success provides course and discipline specific assistance, as well as guidance in developing general learning and study strategies, available to all LSU students. The Center for Academic Success provides six essential services: Supplemental Instruction (SI) collaborative, peer-led study groups for students enrolled in historically difficult courses (D, F, W rate > 30%); tutorial centers mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science; learning strategies workshops and individual consultations to help students improve their time management, test preparation, note taking, and other skills necessary for success; technology classes in state-of-the-art computer applications; nationally recognized website with a learning styles assessment, on-line tutorials, and numerous study strategies workshops, tips and tools; and a Service-Learning program that provides support for courses in which students work with community groups to get hands-on professional experience while fulfilling course requirements.

During the 2001 - 2002 academic year, the CAS served over 10,000 students. Supplemental Instruction collaborative learning activities were provided to students in over 60 courses, Service-Learning was offered in over 120 courses, study strategies information was presented to over 5,000 individuals, and over 1,000 students participated in technology workshops. Additionally the tutorial centers received over 15,000 visits. Over 150 faculty members participated in CAS sponsored workshops on topics including the following: Teaching LSU Students How to Learn: The Key to Improving Academic Performance, Introduction to Service-Learning Pedagogy: Designing Courses for Long-Term Learning, Making Meaning from Experiential Education: Using Reflection for Deep Learning. The CAS also helps instructors develop pedagogical strategies to foster meaningful learning of concepts instead of rote memorization of facts and formulas.
